The Legend of the Returned Sword

According to Vietnamese legend, Emperor Le Loi received a magical sword that helped him defeat the Ming army and restore the country’s independence during the fifteenth century.

After peace returned, the emperor was boating on the lake when a Golden Turtle God appeared and asked him to return the sword. Le Loi handed it back, and the lake became known as Ho Hoan Kiem, meaning the “Lake of the Returned Sword.”

The legend remains an important symbol of Vietnamese independence, patriotism and the relationship between national history and the spiritual world.

Turtle Tower

Standing on a small island in the southern part of the lake, Turtle Tower is one of Hanoi’s most recognizable symbols.

The present tower was constructed in the late nineteenth century and incorporates both Vietnamese and European architectural influences. Although visitors cannot access the island, the tower can be admired from several points around the lake.

Ngoc Son Temple

Ngoc Son Temple stands on Jade Island near the northern shore of Hoan Kiem Lake. The temple honors several respected historical and spiritual figures, most notably the military commander Tran Hung Dao.

The Huc Bridge
