One Day in Ho Chi Minh City from Phu My Port: A Realistic Cruise Itinerary

With one day in Ho Chi Minh City from Phu My Port, you can explore Independence Palace, walk through the vaulted hall of the Saigon Central Post Office, and sit down to a lunch of grilled pork and broken rice. On a long port call, there’s time for Ben Thanh Market, too. The first decision to make is what time you need to leave the city.

Phu My Port is about 50 miles (80 km) from downtown Ho Chi Minh City. Princess Cruises puts the drive at around 90 minutes each way, although its transfer excursion also allows for a journey of approximately two hours and flags possible road delays. For the sample itinerary below, allow two hours each way and an additional hour before all aboard. Adjust those margins to the traffic forecast and your ship’s instructions on the day. A one-day cruise itinerary at a glance

This example assumes you can leave the port at 7:30 a.m. and your ship’s all-aboard time is 5:00 p.m. That gives you roughly four and a half hours in central Saigon. Use the time passengers must be back on board when working out your own schedule. The ship’s sailing time can be later.

Time Plan
7:30–9:30 a.m. Travel from Phu My Port to Independence Palace
9:30–10:45 a.m. Explore the palace, including the basement
10:45–11:45 a.m. Walk to the Central Post Office, see the cathedral exterior, and browse Book Street
11:45 a.m.–12:45 p.m. Stop for a Vietnamese lunch
12:45–1:40 p.m. Choose Ben Thanh Market or a slow coffee near your pickup point
1:40–2:00 p.m. Meet your driver or return to the coach
2:00–4:00 p.m. Drive back to Phu My Port
4:00–5:00 p.m. Allow for delays, port entry, and boarding

If you’d like a guide for the day, Joyous Travel offers a private tour with round-trip transport, an English-speaking guide, and a Vietnamese lunch. Share your ship’s name and all-aboard time when you enquire so the team can confirm your meeting point and when you’ll need to leave the city. Morning in Saigon: Independence Palace and the Central Post Office

Start at Independence Palace, also known as Reunification Palace. From the front lawn, the broad balconies give the building an almost airy appearance. Inside, the change of scene between the formal reception rooms upstairs and the basement’s map-lined workrooms makes the visit memorable. If you have an hour, divide it between those two areas and leave the separate exhibition for a longer visit.

The main entrance is at 135 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street. The palace lists daily visiting hours of 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., subject to special closures. Adult admission is 40,000 VND for the palace or 80,000 VND including the separate exhibition. Official Independence Palace hours and tickets

From the palace, walk along Le Duan Boulevard toward Notre-Dame Cathedral. Allow 10–15 minutes at an easy pace, including time to cross the streets. Plan an exterior view of the cathedral, then head across the square to the Saigon Central Post Office. Look up as you enter. The long vaulted ceiling is easy to miss if you head straight for the postcard racks. Princess currently treats the cathedral as an exterior stop because of restoration work. Beside the post office, Nguyen Van Binh Book Street offers a short, shaded detour. Browse a shelf or two, or use this stretch for a seated break if the morning is already hot.

Lunch: What to order with an hour in the city

For a distinctly southern Vietnamese lunch, look for cơm tấm sườn nướng on the menu. It’s a plate of broken rice topped with a grilled pork chop, usually served with pickled vegetables and a small bowl of fish sauce dressing. Spoon on a little dressing first. If you’d prefer noodles, hủ tiếu is a good choice, often available in broth or served dry with soup on the side.

Choose a restaurant along your route toward Ben Thanh Market or your afternoon pickup point. A nearby table gives you time to eat at a comfortable pace and finish with cà phê sữa đá, Vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk. If traffic took up part of your morning, enjoy lunch here and make the market optional.

Early afternoon: Ben Thanh Market or one more coffee

Choose Ben Thanh Market if you enjoy shopping and have at least half an hour to browse. Pick one thing you’d like to bring home, such as a bag of Vietnamese coffee, and spend your time comparing a few stalls. Photograph the entrance you use and agree on a specific pickup spot with your driver. “Outside the market” leaves room for two people to wait on different streets.

Choose a café near your pickup point if you’d rather see a little of everyday Saigon. A table by an open window, a cold drink, and twenty minutes watching scooters pull up for lunchtime orders can be a satisfying last stop. It’s also the easier choice when your group wants less walking.

Getting back to Phu My Port on time

For an independent shore excursion, work backward from all aboard. In this example, a 5:00 p.m. deadline, a two-hour drive, and a one-hour cushion put departure from downtown at 2:00 p.m. If your driver expects a longer journey, move that departure earlier. Confirm the exact berth, whether the driver meets you at the ship or a port gate, and how much time you need between the drop-off point and the gangway.

If you prefer to explore independently with transport arranged by the cruise line, look for an “on your own” city transfer. For example, Princess offers a coach transfer with free time downtown. Photograph the meeting place when you arrive and follow the departure time given by your escort. Princess Cruises city transfer

What if your port call is shorter?

If all aboard is 4:00 p.m., the same calculation puts your city departure at 1:00 p.m. With a 9:30 a.m. arrival, that still gives you time for the palace, the post office, and an early lunch. Drop Ben Thanh Market and choose a lunch spot close to your pickup point.

If you only have two hours downtown, pick the part of Saigon you came to experience. For history, spend an unhurried hour at Independence Palace and have a coffee nearby. For architecture and street life, start at the post office, stroll down Book Street, and sit down for a plate of cơm tấm. Either route gives you a complete morning in the city and a clear time to head back to the ship.
