S\u00e0i G\u00f2n, well known as the biggest city in Vi\u1ec7t Nam, plays an indispensable role in modern history. The fall of the Khmer Kingdom in the 15th Century almost turned today\u2019s South Vi\u1ec7t Nam into a no-name land, until the late 17th century, when Nguy\u1ec5n H\u1eefu C\u1ea3nh \u2013 a general of Lord Nguy\u1ec5n \u2013 founded Gia \u0110\u1ecbnh garrison and ordered building of roads, canals, markets. From that time Gia \u0110\u1ecbnh has been turned into a busy port city, and when French stepped into Vi\u1ec7t Nam in 19th Century, the name of the city eventually became S\u00e0i G\u00f2n and soon developed to be one of Vi\u1ec7t Nam\u2019s two most important cities. In 1949, S\u00e0i G\u00f2n became the capital of the State of Vi\u1ec7t Nam, where a government was created after the French reoccupied Vi\u1ec7t Nam; and became the capital of the Republic of Vi\u1ec7t Nam after the 1954 Geneva Conference, lasting until the Vi\u1ec7t Nam War ended on April 30, 1975. Over the years, with different turns of history, it still retains many attractive heritages and stories.
